Why your business doesn't appear in AI answers
The usual reasons a genuinely good business goes unmentioned, in the order they're worth checking.
It usually isn't about how good you are
The businesses that go missing from AI answers are rarely the worst ones. They're the ones the machine can't read, can't verify, or can't tell apart from someone else. Quality is invisible to a system that has no way of confirming it.
1. The assistants can't fetch your pages
Worth checking first because it's the cheapest to rule out. Assistants can fetch pages at the moment someone asks. If your site blocks their crawlers, or only assembles its content in the visitor's browser, there may be nothing for them to read.
- Your robots file quietly blocks OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot or similar — often added by a plugin, not by you.
- The page renders empty without JavaScript, so the fetched copy has no words in it.
- A firewall or bot-protection product returns a challenge page to anything that isn't a browser.
- There's no sitemap, so nothing beyond the homepage is ever discovered.
2. It isn't clear which business you are
An assistant will not stake a recommendation on a business it can't pin down. Two versions of your trading name, an old address still live on three directories, a different phone number on your Google listing than on your site — each of those is a reason to reach for a competitor instead.
This is the single most under-rated fix. Making your name, website, phone number, address and founder identical everywhere you appear costs nothing and removes the doubt.
3. Nobody else says what you say
A claim on your own website is the weakest possible evidence. Assistants weight things repeated across sources they didn't have to take your word for: professional registers, industry bodies, local press, genuine review platforms, established directories.
If every fact about you exists only on preselected.app — or your equivalent — then you are asking the machine to trust a stranger. It usually declines.
4. Your pages aren't quotable
Pages written to sound impressive give an assistant nothing to lift. "Excellence delivered with integrity" cannot be turned into a recommendation. "We handle commercial lease disputes for landlords in Greater Manchester, typically £8,000 to £25,000, usually settled without court" can.
- State who you serve and who you don't.
- State where you operate, in the words locals use.
- State the price range, or at least the shape of it.
- State qualifications, registrations and years in the trade as plain facts.
- Answer the questions buyers actually ask, in full sentences, on the page.
5. Someone else occupies the sources being cited
Look at which pages the assistants cite when they answer your category. Very often it's a handful of roundups, directories and forum threads. If your competitors are in those pages and you aren't, the answer is already decided before your website is ever considered.
The route in is to be genuinely present in those sources — listed, reviewed, written about, referenced. Not bought placements; those get stripped out and they don't survive scrutiny.
6. You're simply too new or too quiet
A recently launched site with few external links has almost no signal attached to it. This is not a fault to fix, it's a runway to get through: publish real content, get properly listed, and let the corroboration accumulate. It's months, not days.
The order to work in
Mechanics first, because they're fast and free. Identity second, because it's cheap and removes doubt. Quotable content third. Third-party corroboration last and continuously — it's the slowest and the most durable. Measure before and after each step, or you won't know which one moved anything.
